Buying a Ukulele

Choose a soprano 21" ukulele. (A concert 23" is also fine, it has a more mellow sound but will be more expensive)

There are many ukuleles out there that will be just fine but these are the two brands I have found to be consistently reliable:

  • Mahalo £27+

Available from Foulds Guitars in Derby (excellent customer service) or online.

  • Donner £39-£50

Available online.

I play a Mahalo in lessons. It holds its tuning well and I've never had a fault with one, even really old ones.  Donners are equally good quality and have a sweeter sound in my opinion. Both brands are available in different colours.

You will also need a clip-on digital tuner £10-£16. Available from Foulds or online. If you buy a Donner ukulele, a tuner is included sometimes.

No other accessories are needed but a ukulele stand is useful for both holding the music and leaving the ukulele out, ready for practice.  We often sit on the floor to play in lessons and use the stand for the music. This is the model I use, available online: Tiger UAC19-BK, £12-13.
